Blues & Soul - Review

It is rare in the music industry to hear of a UK act who are still making an impact and thriving musically after more than 30 years. Even though he is approaching four decades of releasing soulful, dubby jazz funk-infused grooves, BKS is still showcasing his relevance in the music scene today. He is a rare breed indeed; a 21st-century Renaissance man extraordinaire, music, photography, fashion or literature, he just sets the bar.

Die-hard fans who have followed since the early days will appreciate this outfit's gift of blending their originality and flare with elements of the old school (think Motown in their psychedelic phase for one), which could act as a gateway for newer fans who will appreciate the subtle yet sophisticated club-like grooves adorned with African conga, beautiful muted trumpet, courtesy of Kenny Wellington and the sterling multi-instrumentalist, Gareth Tasker. Sharpe's vocal hooks interweave with the extremely talented vocalist, Danelle Harvey who sings her heart out on great tunes such as the Quincy Jonesish 'Please Don't Hate Me' - a simple message about judging somebody on the colour of their skin but one that needs to be told nonetheless.

Sharpe is a truly independent and the shackles of any record company are off, social commentary and hard-hitting topics are dealt with and not swept under the carpet, he knows what times we are living in and isn't afraid to put his neck on the line.

It is his vision of creating a soul/jazz/afro funk hybrid combined with talented musicians who bring the music to the fore and add such depth on the album, lovingly crafted and well thought out. There are many highlights here on RRR#2. It's a slow-burner drawing the listener in, check out protest song 'Politicians Only Want War' and the hypnotic and anthemic like 'Get Ready' a nod surely to the great Norman Whitfield and my fav 'Change' adorned with Stevie Wonder-like clavinet, punchy horns and that muted Miles Davis magic really adds the icing on the cake whilst being daring enough to incorporate experimental aspects to gain an entirely new generation of fans.

This is all top-drawer stuff proving that groove is well and truly in the heart, so as the man says 'get involved'...This is a classy follow up to RRR#1 available on vinyl (www.sharpeye.london)…
